This lipoic acid analog disrupts mitochondrial metabolism selectively in vitro and shows strong antitumor activity in vivo. It inhibits alpha-ketoglutarate dehydrogenase (KGDH) via a redox mechanism in tumor cells and inhibits pyruvate dehydrogenase (PDH) through a non-redox effect.
