Two Characteristics of Antigens
The design and preparation of antigens are very important in the production process of antibodies. Antigens are the premise for the preparation of high-quality antibodies. To effectively produce vaccines and antibodies, antigens must have two characteristics:
- Immunogenicity: antigens can induce immune responses in the immune system. Good immunogenicity can stimulate the body to produce humoral and/or cellular immune responses, thus producing antibodies.
- Antigenicity: antigens can have specific reactions with the antibodies or effector cells they produce in vivo or in vitro.

Protein antigens typically exhibit a more accurate conformation when compared to other forms such as peptides or DNA. Therefore, when a protein sample needs to maintain its natural conformation for testing purposes (e.g. development of neutralizing antibodies), protein antigen immunization is typically preferred. In cases where researchers encounter difficulties with full-length protein expression or require specific detection conditions, they can opt for alternative approaches such as using antigenic peptides or DNA.
