Histone Demethylases

Histone demethylases are a type of enzyme that can remove methylation of histones. There are two main types of LSD1 and JmjC family demethylases. Since the first histone demethylase was demonstrated in 2004, researchers have fully characterized the activities of the discovered histone demethylases. It was found that these histone demethylases play important roles in tumors, development, metabolic diseases (diabetes), and other processes.

Although most of the reported histone demethylases are only identification of their biochemical activities and functional studies at the cellular level, these works have laid the foundation for the rise of histone demethylase research.
