Protein Arginine Methyltransferases

Arginine methylation of proteins is a ubiquitous post-translational modification in the cytoplasm and nucleus, involved in various cellular processes such as RNA processing, transcriptional regulation, signal transduction, DNA repair, etc., and is involved in regulating protein-protein interactions. There are three types of arginine methylation in eukaryotes: monomethylated arginine (MMA), asymmetric dimethylated arginine (aDMA), and symmetric dimethylated arginine (sDMA).

Protein arginine methyltransferases (PRMTs) are common enzymes in mammals and are responsible for methylating arginine in protein substrates. Abnormal expression of PRMTs is closely related to tumors, viral infections, cardiovascular system diseases, etc.
