Description
Acyl-Coenzyme A oxidase 3, also known as pristanoyl-CoA oxidase (ACOX3), is an enzyme involved in the desaturation process of 2-methyl branched fatty acids within peroxisomes. In contrast to its rat counterpart, the human gene shows very low expression levels in the liver. This makes it undetectable through routine Northern-blot analysis or measurements of its product via immunoblotting or enzyme activity assays. However, a human cDNA encoding a protein consisting of 700 amino acids and containing a peroxisomal targeting C-terminal tripeptide S-K-L has been isolated. It is believed that this gene may be expressed under specific conditions such as during certain developmental stages or in a tissue-specific manner, although these tissues have not yet been examined.
