Antimetabolite
Antimetabolite is a chemical substance that is synthesized or naturally present in the organism. Its chemical structure is similar to some naturally occurring essential metabolites in the life process. If this substance is incorporated into the body, antimetabolite can specifically antagonize the essential metabolites.
Antimetabolites may have toxic effects on cells, such as preventing cell growth and cell division, so these compounds are used as chemotherapy for cancer. Antimetabolites may also be antibiotics, requiring PABA in the enzymatic reaction that produces folate, which serves as a coenzyme in the synthesis of purines and pyrimidines.
