(-)-Bicuculline MethLodide
Description
(-)-Bicuculline methiodide is a soluble variant of the primary ionotropic GABAA receptor blocker (+)-Bicuculline. As a pioneering and aggressive GABAA receptor antagonist, it displaces GABA from the binding site of the agonist, thus inhibiting receptor activation. It also serves as a negative allosteric inhibitor of channel opening to hinder the activation of the GABAA receptor by anesthetics. Additionally, it shows activity at SK calcium-activated potassium channels, nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, and acetylcholinesterase. This compound blocks currents mediated by the GABAA receptor in a reversible and competitive manner, and is frequently used to isolate glutamate receptor mediated EPSCs (excitatory postsynaptic potentials).
