Dextrans
Dextran, also called glucan, has a molecular formula of [C6H10O5]n. It refers to a homopolysaccharide composed of glucose as a monosaccharide, and the glucose units are connected by glycosidic bonds. According to the type of glycosidic bond, it can be divided into alpha-glucan and beta-glucan.
Dextran is found in the mucus secreted by certain microorganisms as they grow. The structure of dextran also varies depending on the type of microorganism and growth conditions. Gels made of dextran are often used for biochemical separations, such as column chromatography.
