Description
After removing the precursor signal peptide, proinsulin undergoes post-translational cleavage to produce three peptides: B chain and A chain peptides. These two peptides are connected through two disulfide bonds to form insulin, along with C-peptide. The binding of insulin to the insulin receptor (INSR) triggers glucose uptake. Numerous mutant alleles with various effects on phenotype have been identified. There is a gene called INS-IGF2 that overlaps with this gene at its 5' region and also overlaps with the IGF2 gene at its 3' region. Alternative splicing leads to the formation of multiple transcript variants.
